Learn About Colon Cancer

Understanding colon cancer is the first step toward preventing it.
The more you know, the more power you have to protect yourself and your loved ones.

🟡 WHAT IS COLON CANCER?

Colon cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) begins in the large intestine (colon) or rectum. It typically starts as small growths called polyps, which can develop into cancer over time if not detected and removed early.

The good news?
Colon cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when caught early.

🔴 WHY THIS MATTERS

Too many people are diagnosed at later stages simply because:

  • They didn’t recognize the symptoms
  • They delayed screening
  • They didn’t have access to care
  • They believed they were “too young”

👉 Early detection can save your life.

⚠️ SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Colon cancer may not always show symptoms early—but when it does, watch for:

  • Blood in your stool
  • Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent stomach pain or cramps
  • Fatigue or weakness

🚨 If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait—talk to a healthcare provider immediately.

🧬 RISK FACTORS

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Are age 45 or older
  • Have a family history of colon cancer
  • Have a personal history of polyps
  • Eat a diet high in processed or red meats
  • Are physically inactive
  • Smoke or use tobacco
  • Have obesity or diabetes

👉 Important: Colon cancer is affecting younger individuals more than ever before.

🛡️ PREVENTION TIPS

You can reduce your risk by making simple, consistent lifestyle choices:

  • Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Limit red and processed meats
  • Stay physically active
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Avoid smoking
  • Limit alcohol consumption

Small changes today = long-term protection.

🏥 SCREENING & EARLY DETECTION

Screening is the most powerful tool we have to prevent colon cancer.

Recommended Screening Age:

  • Start at age 45 (or earlier if high-risk)

Common Screening Methods:

  • Colonoscopy (most effective)
  • Stool-based tests (at-home options available)

👉 Screenings can detect and remove polyps before they become cancer.

🌍 BARRIERS IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

Many individuals face challenges that prevent early detection:

  • Limited access to healthcare
  • Financial constraints
  • Lack of awareness
  • Fear or stigma around screening
